The decision to study in a new country is exciting and rewarding; however, it can be difficult adjusting to your new environment, the different teaching styles, as well as living in a secular society which operates under a legal system you do not know. However, the challenges that may arise can be overcome when you have the best preparation, support and direction during the transitional phase on your academic path. That is why you should rely on Western Edge Study Transition to prepare you for your journey and direct you to success!
The WEST Academic Transition program helps students to understand the difference in pedagogical styles between educational institutions in their home and host country, the various cultural dimensions that impact the expected engagement and contribution of student toward their learning outcomes, as well as helps students to familiarize themselves with their legal rights and obligations in western society.
I completed a Master of Electrical Engineering at the University of Sydney and I am currently studying a PhD in power electronic Engineering at the University of Technology Sydney. The Academic Transition Program offered by WEST experts helps international students to bridge the cultural and academic gap between their home country and Australia. It makes the transition very smooth and gives students the tools they need to achieve high marks, focus on their studies and know how to deal with issues they may face when moving to a Western country
“I completed a Master of Education (TESOL) at Western Sydney University. The Academic Transition Program offered by WEST provides an essential service to international students seeking a smooth and successful progression into the western education system. The pedagogical differences between the Middle East and western institutions was something that I did not fully appreciate at the beginning of my study and adjusting to the varying teaching styles was hard. To minimise the difficulties that come from not being prepared for such changes the team at WEST have developed an amazing program that helps international students be better prepared for the cultural and academic challenges between western universities and those in the Middle East”.
“I am completing a Master of Education at Western Sydney University. Coming from Iraq, I have had to overcome a lot of difficulties in my course due to the difference in the teaching style from my home country, as well as the expectations of how students engage in classroom discussion. I was not prepared for how different things would be at university because the cultural differences have a big impact on what students are expected to do during the program. This included completing group work (which I has never done before), giving timed PowerPoint presentations and submitting assessment tasks online. To help me understand what was expected and to learn more about how to complete the required tasks, I contacted David Lodge at WEST to help me learn how to function in an Australian university, as well as how to improve my cultural competencies. The Academic Transition Program I have improved my understanding of life in my new environment and my grades have improved more than I could have expected. I highly recommend the WEST Academic Transition Program to all students wanting to study overseas
